Egypt

Egypt is a republic that borders Libya Sudan Saudia Arabia and Israel and has coastline on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea as well as the Sewis Canal linking the two.

It covers a total area of 995,450 sq km and has an estimated population of 78,887,000.  The population is currently estimated to growing at 1.75% per year and the median age of the population is 24.

 

The main religions are Islam, mostly Sunni (with a small percentage of Coptic Christians).

 

The official language is Arabic but English and French are widely understood by the educated classes.

 

The current GDP growth rate is around 4.9%.

The legal system is based on English common law, Islamic law, and Napoleonic codes.  Egypt’s accepts the compulsory International Court of Justice (ICJ) jurisdiction but with reservations.
