Jordan

Jordan is a constitutional monarchy that borders Syria, Iraq, Saudia Arabia, Israel, the Westbank and Golan Heights.  It also has a sea border with the Gulf of Aqaba.  It has an estimated population of 5,906,700 and covers 91,971 sq km.  The median age of the population is 23.

The main religion is Islam, (Sunni) with a small percentage of Christians of different denominations and a small percentage of Shi’a Muslims.  Arabic is the official language but English is widely understood.

Jordan’s economy is sufficiently liberalised for it to have membership of the World Trade Organisation (2000) a free trade accord with the United States (2001) and an Association Agreement with the EU (2001).

The legal system is based on Islamic law and French codes.  Judicial review of legislative acts takes place in a specially provided high tribunal.  It is not accepted the International Court of Justice’s jurisdiction.  The Supreme Court is the Court of Final Appeal.
